A server for people who already know each other needs almost none of what a community layout is built for. Everybody arrives by invite, so there's no entry funnel. Moderation is a message to a friend, and there's no staff structure for it. Splitting the talking eight ways makes little sense when six people are doing it. That's why the layouts here are short.
Voice is usually the point, so most of these spend their channels there. There's one room everyone defaults to and a second for when that one is full or someone wants a quieter conversation. A text channel or two holds links, images, and whatever game is currently on. Roles, where they exist at all, are colors rather than permissions.

Why start from a template
A Discord server template is a complete layout someone has already built and published. It holds channels, categories, roles, and permissions. Applying one to a new or existing server takes a single command and saves an evening of setup.

Copy a proven layout
Templates with thousands of uses have run in real communities rather than been sketched for a gallery. Read the permissions before you announce anything. A template carries whatever its author set.

If your structure works, share it. Make a template in your server settings, submit the link here, and other admins can use it. The stars stay on your entry.

Yes, because it saves the setup. Building even a small layout by hand is an evening of naming channels and fixing the permissions afterward, and applying one is a command. These are already short, so there's usually little to delete.
How is this different from the community templates?
Scale, and the assumptions that come with it. A community layout expects strangers, so it spends its first category on rules, introductions, and a member role. These expect a group that already exists, so they start at the talking.
Are templates really free?
Yes, all of them, on the free plan. Templates are contributed by the community and there’s no paid tier for using them.
Will applying a template delete my server?
No, but it replaces the channels and roles with the ones in the template. Run /backup create first and you can undo it.
Do templates include messages or members?
No. A template only carries structure. Nothing personal from the original server is published with it.
How do I publish my own?
Create a template in your server’s own settings, under Server Template, then paste the link into the submit form here. You choose the name and description in Discord, and the category on the form.

A backup is private to your account and can include messages and member data. A template is public, structure only, and anyone can use it.
Is every template checked before it appears?
Yes. A listing has to name and describe the server it actually offers. Anything with no place in a public gallery is refused, so a template called "test" with an empty description never reaches the listing.

Publish your server's template from the dashboard. Other admins can apply it in one command, and you keep the stars.
